Year 9 - Southampton to Cape Town

Students in Year 9 have been investigating the changes in travel to 'shrink' the world. Part of this unit was to explore the changes to the aviation industry which has caused a revolution in how the earth is viewed. The students have also learnt how to use ArcGIS and specifically the story journal app element of this programme to show a route on a map and then to add information alongside it. To further challenge the students they had to design a route for Imperial Airlines in 1937 that went from Southampton, UK to Cape Town, South Africa. The students needed to consider the distances travelled (no more than 1200km before refuelling), daylight hours (no lights or radar on the plane) and the fact they had to land on water as it was a flying boat. While this was a challenging task that also drew on their mathematical skills as well as historical knowledge of countries the students rose to the challenge. Examples of the story maps can be found below.
