Year 9 - Explorers Magazine Front Covers

The students in class 9i each investigated a particular explorer from the unit of inquiry on "The Age of Global Encounters: Exploration, Discovery and Resource Acquisition". They carried out their research and put their notes into a graphic organiser, evaluated two of their sources and then had to create a "snapshot" of the explorer in the form of a magazine cover for a journal like "Time" magazine. The students were required to focus on the motivations of the explorer (Gold, Glory, God) and his achievements and the resource acquisition that resulted from the 'discovery' of unknown lands (tobacco, silver, gold and the humble potato among other resources discovered  in the Americas and in the African continent). They were also required to reflect on  some of the negative outcomes of this age of exploration and the concept of zero sum gain. Examples of the front covers can be seen below:
