Our year 12 CP students organised a careers evening for year 11s and other students. The planning and running of this event goes hand in hand with the study of a project and event management as part of their BTEC business course.
The event was a huge success with 80 students in attendance and 18 guest speakers. The refreshments were kindly paid for by the PTA and the BTEC class thank them for their generosity. The event had a new format and goal this year. The goal was to inspire students, to enable them to broaden their horizons and to challenge their perceptions of what people do for a living. A 'speed dating' format was used and the theme of the event was jobs which 'serve' in some way. Therefore examples of the types of speakers in attendance were people who work in the community, those whose jobs serve the environment, protect the rights of others or those who are looking to solve problems to ensure a better future for all. So scientists, conservationists, activists, medical researchers, as well as those who serve in the field - in disaster areas. Parents were invited to join us for refreshments prior to the DP / CP options choices evening which followed.
The event was considered a success, with lots of positive feedback. Like all good event organisers and project managers the next step is to evaluate the project management and the event itself to learn how to make next years careers evening even better!
