Historical Fiction Competition - Year 8

Each year we enter students in a historical fiction competition which is run by the Historical Association. Students are asked to write a short story that is convincingly set in a past time and place. While technically students can base their story on any period of history we focus on the Middle Ages as that is the era we study in Year 8. In previous years students have found the Battle of Hastings, the Black Death and witch craft to be particularly engaging subjects to write about.

For this competition we work closely with the English department. While English focuses on the 'nittty gritty' of the structure of stories and key writing skills, Individuals and Societies provide the framework for the historical era (as well as the enthusiasm). Good stories describe the setting of the piece in detail and are able to confidently use artefacts from the medieval era.
